Training courses

Introduction to GIS (21-26 April, 2008)
The first training course on GIS was held for the staff of the State Agency on Registration of Rights to Real Estate (GOSREGISTR) from 21 to 26 of April, 2008. This course was organised by Swedesurvey and the Kyrgyz State University for Construction, Transportation and Architecture and was conducted by ACA*GIScience staff members. This course covered basics of GIS and gave an overview of GIS Software. The main focus was on Free and Open Source GIS Software.

Introduction to GIS (16-21 June, 2008)
This intensive training course on GIS was held for epidemiology scientists from Azerbajdjan from 16 to 21 of June, 2008. It was organised by KCGE and the Kyrgyz State University for Construction, Transportation and Architecture and was conducted by ACA*GIScience staff members. The course was focused on use of GIS for tracking, prevention and control of outbreaks and spreading of various diseases and epidemics.

Using of ArcGIS 9.2 (7-11 July, 2008)
The second training course on GIS was held for the staff of the State Agency on Registration of Rights to Real Estate (GOSREGISTR) from 7 to 11 of July, 2008. This course was organised by Swedesurvey and Kyrgyz Agrarian University, and it was conducted by ACA*GIScience staff members. The course was focused on ArcGIS 9.2. functionality.

EPU Scholarship Awarded

The Eurasia-Pacific Uninet (www.eurasiapacific.net) has awarded an on- site scholarship to Ms. Aliyah Mamytova. As a recent graduate from KSUCTA she will work on ACA*GIScience projects and at the same time take the UNIGIS MSc programme through the University of Salzburg. She will be part of the Centre staff for at least two years.

UNIGIS Study Centre in Bishkek

UNIGIS MSc and professional certificate programmes are now offered in Central Asia through the UNIGIS (www.unigis.net) study centre at the Kyrgyz State University for Construction, Transportation and Architecture (KSUCTA) in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic.

Continuing and higher education in Geographic Information Science and Technologies and Geoinformatics methods is important for developing Spatial Data Infrastructures across nations and regions as a foundation for sustainable economies, societies and environments. Increasingly, enterprises, non-governmental organisations and public agencies apply Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to reach their objectives and to better serve their customers. "GIS" has become an attractive and rewarding career path for motivated and skilled professionals worldwide - with the UNIGIS academic network being the global leader in GIScience distance education.

This new UNIGIS study centre is integrated with the Austria - Central Asia Centre for GIScience (www.aca-giscience.org) and offers in-service distance education for professionals interested in GIS and Geoinformatics. Courses towards the MSc as well as certificate qualifications will be launched with an on-site workshop in September and lead students to international academic degrees / certificates awarded by the University of Salzburg, Austria.
